Summer Water Sports Program
This past July, DREAM Board Members and volunteers hosted the 3rd annual Summer Water Sports Program for disabled children and adults to experience the wonderful water recreation possibilities in Northwest Montana. This year’s event was incredible and the most common activity was smiling. Participants of all ages with a wide variety of developmental and physical disabilities were represented for the three-day event held at Big Sky Bible Camp on Lake Petersen.
A pontoon boat was on hand all three days and was a big hit this year. It was part boat ride and part historical sightseeing tour with some lucky participants even taking a turn at the helm to drive the boat.
Participants were able to use two boats; one for tubing and the other for skiing with very little down time between runs on the lake. They were allowed to ski and tube as many times as they wanted with some kids alternating between the boats all day long. For those who enjoy a slower pace, they were able to go on a boat ride, swim or kayak in a small cove nearby.

Everyone came away knowing that they had been a part of something great. The Water Sports Program is an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to have fun water skiing and tubing at the lake, but it’s also a time for children of all ages to discover their capabilities. For some, this kind of growth is difficult. So after success there is excitement and a greater sense of pride. Our volunteers come to help and encourage those who may need a hand, but often go away with their heart full, their resolve to continue helping strengthened, and the knowledge that they have achieved growth as well.
We hope to expand the Summer Program next year. There are plans to offer the Water Sports Program multiple times next year and to provide other activities such as fishing, sailing, biking, and adaptive climbing.
